This Writ petition has been filed by a Lawyers Association for directing the authorities to take measures for preservation of the Cultural Heritage of Tamil Nadu by promoting of Folk Arts and by taking care for the welfare of the Folk Artistes.

2.The article authored by Samas in Tamil Hindu paper on 16.10.2015 has triggered the institution of this Writ Petition. The article portrays the condition of a folk Artiste by name Nadi Rao, who was awarded “Kalaimamani” by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

3.The first respondent has filed a counter affidavit. It is submitted that the Department of Art and Culture is taking all necessary steps to promote traditional art forms and to create awareness among the public.

4.It is also mentioned that the Folk Cultural programmes like Karagattam, Mohiniattam, Kuthiraiattam, Thappatam, etc. all are being performed in the Government functions. The various steps taken to encourage such Folk arts have also been set out in the counter affidavit.

5.We direct the Government in particular, the Department of Tourism and Culture to continue to take all steps to encourage the Tamil Folk arts and also protect the interest of the Folk Artists. This cannot put a one time measure but a continuing activity.

6.This Writ Petition is disposed of with the above direction. No costs.
