Heard Shri Abhishek Kumar Chaubey, learned counsel for the petitioner and Shri Rajiv Gupta, learned Additional Chief Standing Counsel for the State-respondents.

On 01.05.2023, this Court had granted time to the learned Additional Chief Standing Counsel to obtain instructions.

Learned Additional Chief Standing Counsel states that despite letters written, he could not get instructions from the respondents.

Grievance of the petitioner is that his application for issuance/renewal of character certificate is pending before the respondent no.2 and it is not being issued despite report dated 30.01.2023 submitted by the Joint Director of Prosecution, Sonebhadra to the Superintendent of Police, Sonebhadra.

Learned Additional Chief Standing Counsel states that the application of the petitioner for issuance of character certificate shall be decided by the respondent no.2, in accordance with law, within a time bound period.

In view of the aforesaid and without expressing any opinion on merits of the case of the petitioner, this writ petition is disposed of with a direction to the respondent no.2 to decide the application of the petitioner for character certificate, in accordance with law, expeditiously, preferably within two weeks from the date of submission of a certified copy of this order, after affording reasonable opportunity of hearing to the petitioner.
