The reservation and protection of ancient monuments and heritage is undoubtedly an important task before any society. The government which is the principal authority under various statutes also has a machinery to deal with the legal duty to protect such

monuments. The petitioner who is a retired Superintendent of Archaeology Department, has come before us raising certain grievances with respect to the archaeology important sites in districts Kota and Jhalawar. According to him, these monuments which require extensive and urgent restoration work, however, the same is not being done by the government in proper manner. Principally the grievances of the petitioner are that such restoration is being done without full study and is entrusted to a contractor who in any case is not implementing the government proposals. The petitioner has produced certain documents to show the sites before and after restoration. The government has filed reply along with which the government has also produced documents of both nature.

From the photographs produced before us one thing is absolutely clear that primarily these monuments require urgent and extensive restoration work and without which these monuments may be under serious threat of demolition and natural decay.

Having said that, it would be impossible for this court sitting here to give directions to the government to carry out such restoration in a particular manner. If the petitioner has bonafide intentions of including such restoration work and as he claims, also has a necessary technical knowhow, he should coordinate with the government and assist the Archaeology Department of the State Government in order to ensure that such restoration work is done in satisfactory manner.

Under the circumstances, let the petitioner point out his points where such restoration should be done in a better manner
