The present petition has been filed for issuance of direction to respondents no. 1 to 3 to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners at the instance of respondents no. 4 to 9.

It has been averred that the petitioners are major and got married against the wishes of their parents on 30.03.2014 at Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Niwas Sahib, District Mohali. It is further submitted that the petitioners belong to the same caste i.e. Ramdasia Sikh and the same village. Petitioner no. 1 is 19 years of age and her date of birth is 25.10.1995 as per the matriculation Certificate whereas petitioner no. 2 is 28 years old and his date of birth is 20.03.1986, as per the copy of driving license and he is a Government employee. A representation has also been made to respondent no. 2 on 30.03.2014 (Annexure P-5) for providing protection to the life and liberty of the applicants.

After hearing counsel for the petitioners and without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case or the validity of the marriage, this Court is of the opinion that the petitioners are entitled to protection of life and liberty in view of the law laid down by the Apex Court in Lata Singh vs. State of U.P., AIR 2006 SC 2522.

Accordingly, the present petition is disposed of with directions to respondents no. 2 and 3 to look into the allegations made in the representation and take necessary steps to ensure that the life and liberty of the petitioners is protected.
