This writ petition has been filed with a prayer that a writ in the nature of Mandamus be issued directing the respondents to inquire into the cases of deaths of prisoners lodged in the various jails in the State of Punjab due to poisoning etc. It is further prayed that for such deaths adequate compensation be provided to the families of the victims.
Before issuance of notice of motion, on 26.2.2010 it was noted that the issues raised in this writ petition has already been referred to the Jail Reforms Committee for its consideration. The said Committee was constituted by this Court to suggest the reforms in the conditions of the Jails in the States of Punjab and Haryana. It was headed by a former Judge of this Court. The Committee, during its existence, submitted

various interim reports. The State counsel assures this Court that the recommendations made by the above said Committee from time to time shall be implemented forthwith.
In view of the assurance given by the State counsel, this Court is not required to adjudicate the matter any further and the same stands disposed of.
