This letter petition has been sent by Estate Officer, Sambhar Salt Limited, Sambhar Lake Rajasthan regarding the illegal and unauthorized discharge of the sewerage drain from the colony situated behind RTDC Craft Bazaar & Hotel, Mataji Road, Sambhar Lake into the Chanakya Drain. It has been reported that the sewerage drain of the colony situated behind RTDC Craft Bazaar & Hotel, Mataji Road, Sambhar Lake has been illegally and unauthorizedly connected to the Chanakya Drain, which ultimately flows into Sambhar Lake.

Sambhar Lake is a protected wetland of international importance, designated as a Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention and is ecologically highly sensitive. The discharge of untreated sewage into the Chanakya Drain poses a serious risk of contaminating Sambhar Lake. Such pollution is likely to adversely affect the lake's ecological balance and water quality, as well as the food sources, habitat, and health of the migratory birds that visit the lake, thereby causing significant damage to its biodiversity. It is pertinent to mention that Sambhar Lake has previously witnessed a major ecological tragedy involving the deaths of a large number of migratory birds. Furthermore, the discharge of any kind of wastewater into a wetland is strictly prohibited under the provisions of the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017. Therefore, the discharge of the aforesaid sewerage drain into the wetland area constitutes a direct and serious violation of the said Rules. In addition, continued discharge of sewage through the said drain is likely to deteriorate the quality of the water and may adversely affect the quality of salt produced by Sambhar Salt Limited, thereby impacting the production and functioning of the company.

The grievance has been raised before the district officers with copy to the Wetland Authority. Accordingly, the copy of the application and relevant document be sent to the District Magistrate, Sambhar Lake, Jaipur for taking necessary action according to rules.
