This writ petition, by way of public interest litigation, has been filed seeking a writ of mandamus directing the respondents to restart the renovation work of dismantling and rebuilding Arulmigu Sri Kamatchi Sametha

It is stated that the work of renovation and repairing commenced, but stopped after elections had been announced. The learned counsel appearing on behalf of the petitioner has rightly submitted that after announcement of elections, new projects cannot be commenced, but there is no bar to continuation of the projects which have already commenced.

On behalf of the respondent/Hindu Religious Charitable Endowment Department, a report of the Inspector at Ulundurpet has been submitted, wherefrom it appears that repairing and renovation works shall be undertaken by raising contributions from donors/benefactors, devotees, general public and also from funds with the department.

The writ petition is disposed of. The
respondent/department undertakes to finish the
repairing/renovation works as early as possible, preferably
within one year from date. No costs.
