The appellant was married to Jayshree in the year 1993. They had three children i.e. 2 sons and one daughter. The eldest son Tushar was about 8 years old at the time of the incident. The appellant along with his wife and children was residing at village Mhasoli, Taluka Karad, District Satara. The appellant was addicted to liquor and he used to frequently make demand for money from his father-in-law and also used to assault Jayshree on this count. The incident took place on 13th February, 2006. At that time, the appellant, his wife Jayshree and their children were in the house. At about 10 p.m. the appellant started beating his wife Jayshree by hand. Then the appellant stabbed his wife Jayshree with a knife on chest and stomach. Jayshree died on the spot. Thereafter the appellant ran away. This incident was witnessed by the children of Jayshree and appellant. The eldest of the three children was PW-2 Tushar. PW-2 Tushar and his brother Jaykar started shouting. On hearing the shouts, their uncle and aunt and the other persons residing nearby gathered there. Someone informed the police on telephone. PW-1 Vithal, father of Jayshree, who was residing in another village was also informed on telephone about the incident.
