An			affi	davit	of		Mr.P.A	.Naringrek	ar,	Sup	erintendent
of	Gardens	has		been	filed	b	y the	Munic	ipal	C	orporation
for	Greater	M	um	bai	(for		short,	‘	the	Co	rporation’).
Interalia,	i	n the		said	affi	davit	the	details	h	ave	been
given	regarding	pla	nta	tion	and	m	aintenance	of	t	rees.	It
is	stated	that	in	the	yea	r	1976,	there	were	3572	7 trees
only	in	the	city	of	Mumb	ai	which	has no	w	increased	to
2,08,096	b	ecause		of	planta	tion	of	trees		and	the
maintenance		by		the	Corporat	ion.	It	is	stated	that	in
the	last	5 yea	rs,	90	,770	trees	have	been	pla	nted	along
with	the	road		sides	and	in	open	spaces		in	Municipal
area.		The		infor	mation		regard	ing	planta	tion	and
maintenance	of	trees		and	list		of ty	pes o	f	trees	required

to be planted	with specific	norms	are cont	ained	in	the
booklet issued	by the	Tree	Authority		and	the
Corporation.	We are sati	sfied with	the	efforts	made	by
the Tree Authority and the C	orporation with regard	to
the plantation of trees and the	maintenance.

2. Though the petitioner h	as so	ught	for	certain
directions that the students from	standard	VIt	h to	IXth
be made to plant one sapling each	and	should	take	care
of it for initial three months	and te	achers	should	be
given short-term training courses	on	Enviro	nment	and/or
tree plantation and few other directions, we are afraid such directions cannot be given.
3. We hope that in ensuing	monsoon,	the	Tree	Authority
shall take steps in planting as many trees as it could
within the Municipal area of Mumbai.
4. With the aforesaid observations, writ petition is
disposed of.
